Narcissism is an insidious human trait. Once you learn about it, one can look back into history and see how destructive it is to our fellow humans and, now, our planet. Kings, emperors, titans of industry, and schoolyard bullies. They all seek to be glorified at any cost.
Here’s an insane idea: a one semester course on human emotional flaws taught at the junior level in high school. Everyone could learn about narcissistic tendencies in humans…, and about other psychological traits that we all have, such as depression and anxiety. The WHO estimates that 1 in 8 people lives with a psychological disorder.
I agree, wholeheartedly! A semester per year in high school would be more appropriate. My depression and anxiety were caused by a narcissistic mother. Wish I’d had an opportunity to learn more about it sooner.
Thank you for sharing your story. It’s so unjust to have a parent who uses emotions against their kid. I just realized how tricky it will be for a teen to react productively to a high school class teaching a parent is a narcissist.
I didn’t really learn my mom was a narcissist until I was in counseling until my 40s. At that point, my only defense was to stay as far away from her as I could. The knowledge has been helpful in recognizing and avoiding other narcissists.

Usually, the only defense at any age is to stay as far away as possible because they’ll never change.
